Sketches of Us. Living Connections.
AAAAfrotopia began as a sketchbook — filled with portraits, gestures, and fragments of stories collected across Africa and the diaspora.
Each line tells of someone met, somewhere seen — strangers turned into muses, moments into marks. Each sketch was a quick impression of someone met along the way — a visual diary of faces, laughter, accents, and rhythm.
What started as a spontaneous series of portraits became an archive of belonging: a hand-drawn celebration of identity across eight African nations. What started as simple travel sketches evolved into an illustrated archive of encounters: eight nationalities, countless faces, and one shared rhythm of identity.
Every drawing was later digitised and transformed through riso printing — merging the texture of the handmade with the precision of the digital.
The process was gloriously imperfect: ink bled, colours overlapped, and some misprints turned into new discoveries.
Those beautiful flaws became the project’s heartbeat — proof that design, like people, thrives in movement and imperfection.
The “AAAA” in AAAAfrotopia stands for the layered essence of the project:
-
Afrocentric: Rooted in heritage and community.
-
Afrofuturistic: Dreaming boldly of the future.
-
Afropolitan: Moving fluidly between spaces, cultures, and stories.
Together, they shape Afrotopia — an imagined world where design meets belonging.
- Analogue first: Every drawing is born from paper and pen.
-
Riso texture: Layers of ink expressing cultural overlap and shared humanity.
-
Archive meets art: Postcard-sized prints (105 × 148 mm) designed for touch and memory.
- Digital echo: Extended into a playful Instagram archive — a bridge between tactile art and online community.
From postcards came posters, playful compositions celebrating pattern, personality, and presence.
Each print layered identity over texture, storytelling over colour.
Riso printing’s unpredictability became part of its charm, a reminder that creativity, like people, resists perfect alignment.
AAAAfrotopia is a living celebration of African identity, across borders, across mediums, across time.
It’s a record of belonging through creativity, seriously meaningful in message, slightly playful in form, and always purposeful in heart.
